Happy Birthday, Selina of Frock Shop!

Today's birthday girl is Selina Stanford, owner of Frock Shop in Memorial. Each month we celebrate a local business owner on her special day.

Happy birthday! How are you celebrating this year?
I'm super excited to take a trip to NYC this week to explore some new brands for Frock Shop and attend the U.S. Open Women's Finals. And all the sweet birthday gatherings with friends and family in Houston!

How many candles are you blowing out?
44 magical candles.

What's on your birthday wish list?
Anything citrine-colored is making me so happy! Brunch with my favorites, styled with this happy collection curated by Houses and Parties while sipping my favorite Field & Tides Bloody Mary wearing any diamond piece from Houston Diamond Girl or this amazing Stephanie Gottlieb eternity band would be dreamy!

What was your background before opening Frock Shop?
I was an in-house attorney for several years before deciding to stay at home with my three daughters. While I loved having the opportunity to stay home with the kids, I was constantly searching for new business ventures. I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and built my passion into Frock Shop! It marries all the things I love most: connecting with people, organizing events, collaborating and supporting other women-owned businesses all done with a side of fashion!

Dream frock for fall?
I’m so giddy for anything Sea NY right now!

Describe your customer.
Free spirited, loves local and dresses colorfully!

Favorite fall trends.
Short cowboy boots, quilted prints and statement jackets.

Your bestselling brands.
Houston favorite Hunter Bell, Sea NY, Aviator Nation and Emerson Fry.

Describe your personal style.
I dress for my mood, so my style ranges from classic, bohemian, to edgy, but always feminine and adventurous!

Finish the sentence: A great frock can make a woman feel_________.
Empowered to be her true self!

Your daily uniform?
I wear a fun frock almost every day, pockets are a major plus! Lately, I’ve been living in my Arizona Love trekkys and Emerson Fry cotton dresses.

Always in your work bag.
Jentry Kelley concealer!

Neighborhood you call home?
I feel so blessed to call Hunters Creek home. It’s a wonderful community filled with loving families and an amazing place to raise kids!

Local businesses you love supporting.
There are so many amazing women-owned businesses that have inspired and encouraged me along the way. Some of my faves are Little Coterie, Your Butler's Pantry, Lindsey Leigh Jewelry, Golden Thread, Young Wild and Friedman and SheSpace.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, where are we most likely to find you?
Breakfast - I usually skip; Lunch - Ember & Greens; Dinner - Federal American Grill.

Three apps you can't live without.
Later - it’s the best for planning our Instagram posts. Reels - I love music and dancing and it’s been fun to add this element into my business! Lightroom -  an easy editing app for photos.

We love your outfit inspo pics on Instagram. How has Instagram helped your business?
Instagram has completely transformed my business from a temporary pop-up into two businesses: a full fledged brick and mortar open six days a week AND an online store open for 24/7 shopping. It’s been fun to watch it grow!

New book you can't wait to devour…
Libertie - Inspired by the life of one of the first Black female doctors in the US, it’s a coming of age story of a young woman and the meaning of freedom.

Do you remember the first "frock" you ever owned?
I have three sisters and growing up, my mom used to love to dress us alike. Think lots of ditsy florals, smocking and lace, all of which are currently so on trend again! I love seeing past styles reimagined as it keeps us connected to our past.
