How’s your trip going so far?
Fast and furious! We got in yesterday and went right to [the Wortham] which is sort of sad because my favorite museum in the world, the Menil, was closed on Monday and Tuesday.

So you've been here before.
Multiple times. I pick cities by museums. To sit in the Rothko Chapel is so incredible. It's so inspiring and just viscerally emotional and I love Houston. I love Texas. Texas has been incredibly generous and warm with me.

Do you have any favorite Houston restaurants?
I once drove 20 minutes out on the highway to some BBQ place that looked like it was a 50s fast food joint that was delicious. BBQ is very big in our family. I have to clean my hands though before I get onto the silk files and taffeta.

With all your success, are you still intimidated by Anna Wintour [who helped put you on the map]?
No. I’m inspired by powerful women who are leaders. She holds everything to such a high level of  perfection. And I’m a perfectionist and Scorpio as well. Of course you are always nervous... You know, I only ever want to bring wonderful news to her. But I adore her. She’s been a great mentor and friend.

What are you most proud of to this day?
Dressing the first lady was incredible. Dressing Angelina Jolie was really fun. Gwyneth Paltrow. Cate Blanchett. Oprah. I’m most proud that I’ve been able to dress a diversity of different kinds of women. Of age. Of race. Of body. That I’ve been able to create a message of joy within glamour.

What is your favorite cocktail?
I make a fierce Bloody Mary. But, it’s more of a Massachusetts recipe. I also love a red beer. That’s always fun.

What about a go-to holiday dish?
I cook three nights a week. I love stuffing. I’m so crazy about it. I love doing it in the muffin tin so it gets crispy and soft inside. I love all kinds of squash and pumpkins.

And looking past the holidays, what excites you about the Spring 2013 collections?
I think it’s a great time to invest in a dress and I think it’s a dress and jacket moment.
