Ask A Realtor

As part of our Tidbits Birthday Girl series, we caught up with a realtor to find out what's hot in the Houston home market.

This month's birthday girl is Kate Doke, Realtor Associate at Greenwood King

Happy birthday! How are you celebrating this year?
Weather permitting, we are going to have some old-school fun with our best friends and play miniature golf and laser tag at Speedy’s!

How many candles are you blowing out?

Best part about selling homes?
I love getting to meet and talk to new people and seeing so many different types of properties. Being a native Houstonian, it has been fascinating to see how the neighborhoods have grown and changed over time. I genuinely love learning about the story behind older homes and helping clients find a home they are going to create new memories in.

Advice for first-time home buyers?
It doesn’t have to be such a stressful, nerve-racking experience. A good agent should make you feel like the deal is the smoothest thing that has ever happened. I strive to make sure that they are completely educated on the process and also connected with a good lender.

What neighborhoods do you specialize in?
I focus on mainly inside the Beltway, but I go where my clients are. I’ve recently done The Woodlands and Katy.

What areas are “hot” right now?
The Heights is still on fire right now, especially Norhill.

How has the pandemic impacted the market?
At the beginning there was a lot of uncertainty, but it hasn’t slowed the Houston market at all - can’t slow down Houstonians! Inventory is pretty slim, so anything that comes on the market and is priced well is selling within days. I am excited to be a part of it!

Home trends you love right now?
Gray walls, fun wallpaper (give me all the wallpaper!), and the movement back to a slightly more traditional layout. For years an open concept was the big trend, but now with everyone being home more the need for separate work spaces is driving people away from a fully open concept.

People would be surprised to learn this about you.
My first career was in the wine industry and I am a Certified Sommelier.

What's on your birthday wish list?
Dying to try Westman Atelier foundation, a facial from Trellis Spa or SkinScience by Katy and some new additions for my spring wardrobe (loving these dresses from Christy Lynn).

Your daily uniform?
With this recent weather I’ve been living in my black Madewell Roadtripper jeans (I love them so much I have 3 pairs), sweaters and P448 sneakers since I'm always running in and out. When I'm working from home early morning or late night, I am usually in my Edith Hour robe.

Always in my work bag.
Water, sanitizer, extra masks, tape measure, notepad, snacks, sunscreen and if I could fit an espresso machine in there I would!

Neighborhood you call home and why you love it?
Lynn Park. We have lived here for 4 years and love it so much! It is a  small, friendly, neighborhood and has the best location and access for our family. We live in an older ranch style home and spend 90% of time in our amazing backyard.

Go-to takeout spots these days?
Tiny Boxwoods, Flower Child and truly any pizza place. All pizza is good pizza to me.

New book I can't wait to devour…
Two books at the top of my list are Anxious People by Fredrik Backman and Fake Accounts by Lauren Oyler.

Podcasts and series I'm addicted to…
I LOVE PODCASTS. I do a lot of Stuff You Should Know, Motive for Murder, Over My Dead Body, Dying for Sex, Blood Ties, Origins, Comments by Celebs keeps me updated on all the things.

Do you watch any real estate or home shows?
I can’t live without Million Dollar Listing LA. I love Josh Flagg, Josh Altman, the Brits and honestly - what woman doesn’t want to be Tracy Tutor? She is such a bad a** b****.
