No more traffic-haulting neck craning necessary – the Jonathan Adler boutique you’ve been doing drive by’s past on West Fifth officially opens today. Austin Tidbits sat down with the preppy prince of mod home design to celebrate the debut of his brightly-colored lifestyle boutique, that’s an instant mood lift—no pill popping required.
You’ve been known to say, “Your home should be like a good dose of Zoloft.” What’s Jonathan Adler’s happy pill?
I have very little to be unhappy about. I have a great life, a business I love in which I get to be as creative as I want, the best husband on earth and the most adorable dog ever. My favorite activity is paddle boarding on the bay outside of our Shelter Island house. That makes me really happy.
Are you super crafty?
It’s embarrassing, but I’m kinda un-DIY. I am really good at making pots though. Does that count?
Yes! You design with a lot of orange. Any plans for burnt orange pieces?
I love orange—I think it’s nature’s anti-depressant. Orange is the color of sunshine. I’ve always rooted for UT sports teams because of their commitment to orange!
Texas women’s style is…
Over the top and glamorous – even when a Texas gal is in jeans, she is usually dripping with turquoise, if not diamonds.
People would be surprised to find ________ in Jonathan Adler’s home.
A football—I’m a closet athlete.
Blackberry or iPhone?
I’m afraid it’s a Blackberry. My chubby little digits can’t work the iPhone properly.
Fave new product in your line.
I’m kinda in love with the Alexandra vase in my Santorini collection.
Number one mistake people make when decorating?
Playing it safe. At the end of the day, when you’re about to kick the bucket, you’ll fondly remember a burnt orange breakfast room and not a beige foyer.
Which celeb fan of yours are you most flattered by?
It always amazes me when heroes of mine buy my work. It is one of the most delightful elements about my job. Lots of my fave fashion designers buy my stuff, and I’m always thrilled. But I think the best was being in Chez Bowie and seeing my work. He is my hero.
