Cowgirl Cool

Although the cowboy boot trend comes and goes, there is still one neck of the woods that always welcomes an outfit with western flair. Giddy-up over to Marathon, Texas, and then slow things down for a relaxing weekend of basking under the stars of that big west Texas sky. This one-horse town makes big city life seem like a line-dance partner with two left feet.

Rest your bones at the Gage Hotel. Book your stay at the historic portion built in 1927, or upgrade to one of the newly added-on casitas. Make sure to ask for a room with its own kiva-style fireplace.

After a relaxing night, rise and shine for a homestyle breakfast, hot cup of coffee at the Courtyard Cafe (located within the Marathon Motel) before gearing up for a day of sightseeing. If you’re looking for some small town culture, visit the Baxter Gallery and Evans Gallery, and then pick up a few good reads from Front Street Books.

On the other hand, if you are in the mood for an outdoors experience, travel 40 miles south to Big Bend National Park and enjoy up-close views of the Chisos Mountains.

After working up an appetite, grab lunch from the The French Company Grocer and have a picnic lunch in the new 7.5 acre Gage Gardens, located within the hotel’s grounds.

Now that you’re fully in relaxation mode, enjoy a few aperitifs at The Gage’s White Buffalo Bar. Sip on fine tequila or savor a good brew before dinner before heading to dinner at Cafe Cenizo where legendary head chef, Paul Peterson, will wow you with regional southwest specialties, complete with vegetables and herbs grown right on the property. After dinner, get cozy by the outdoor fire pit and star gaze until you get sleepy.
